Welcome to New York City...
The story of New York begins around 1609 when the English explorer Henry Hudson sailed the river which is now named after him. He was originally hired by the Dutch East India Company to find a new route to China, but accidentally stumbled upon the land that would be modern day New York . In 1624, Hudson founded the first settlement on this land for the Dutch and named it New Amsterdam. The colony flourished through fur trading and eventually developed into popular commercial trading port. In 1664, the English seized control of the territory from the Dutch and renamed the colony New York after the Duke of York who resided over the colony. And so began the illustrious history of New York City.
Today, New York is a bustling metropolitan area with a population of over eight million. Besides being the most populous city in the United States, NYC also serves as a cultural capital, financial hub, and center of innovation, including urban planning.
