One of many of the PlaNYC’s initiatives Million Trees looks to improve the quality of life of New York’s citizens; by increasing it’s urban forest. The program sets up planting dates, care instructions and equipment but volunteers provide the labor. It is a good way for the public to be involved and feel apart of the sustainable movement. The break down of how the trees are to be distributed is the following[i]. In addition the Million Trees project awards TreeLC mini-grants up to $1000 to grass roots groups. The grant money goes to helping improve tree health in their community. This year they gave out 18 of these across all five boroughs, allowing these organizations to provide care, plantation, and education for the cause.[ii] Grass roots organizations hold a long history in New York for the green movement; their participation continues this tradition.[iii]
