Waste
A simple goal of diverting 75% of solid waste from landfills by the year 2030. New York City has undertaken the task to create a better waste infrastructure to reduce waste and keep it out of their landfills. The waste management system will be evaluated, and redone to become more productive and efficient. Each year the city generates over 14 million tons of waste and recyclables, and that number will only continue to get larger with an increasing population.[i] Through PlaNYC 13 initiatives have been created to help combat global climate change through less solid waste in landfills. It is estimated that if this goal is obtained, it will reduce green house gas emissions by 1 million metric tons; which will improve the quality of life for more than just New York’s citizens.
